The past tense of a clue determines the answer; as an example, “Traveled on horseback” would be a suitable clue for the response RODE but not for RIDE.
  • Many wordplay-based hints in puzzles are meant to be cracked symbolically or in some other way than their literal connotation, which calls for some kind of lateral thinking. This could either be indicated by a question mark at the end of the clue or by a modifier like “maybe” or “perhaps,” depending on the puzzle designer or editor.
  • The indicator may be left out in more challenging riddles, which makes it more difficult to distinguish between literal meaning and wordplay meaning.
